Air Berlin to fly UK domestic routes
Air Berlin have announced that from 16 December 2005 they will become the first German airline to offer domestic flights within the UK. They are due to make London (Stansted) a hub airport, adding routes to Manchester and Glasgow.
They will fly up to twice daily on these new routes. Stansted to Glasgow is a highly competitive route, with existing competition from easyJet and FlyGlobespan. FlyGlobespan have even introduced free breakfasts on their morning flights on this route, and their route between Edinburgh and Stansted, in an attempt to lure passengers away from their rivals.
Air Berlin will also become the first airline to use Stansted as a transfer hub. It will be possible to connect from Glasgow or Manchester to the destinations Air Berlin already serves from Stansted, and Air Berlin will ensure the safe transfer of your luggage from one flight to the next. This is exactly the sort of frill that was traditionally removed from the low-cost airline model.
The new flights are already available to book at www.airberlin.com.

Smaller low-cost airlines rescue routes?
Both easyJet and Ryanair have been flexing their muscles in the last few days and making use of their power as the largest low-cost airlines in Europe. easyJet will cease operating a route between Glasgow and Amsterdam at the end of October, despite the assertion by Glasgow Airport that this route (also operated by KLM) is the busiest international route at the airport.
Ryanair have also announced plans to reduce the number of flights operated between London (Stansted) and Newquay by 12 flights per week from October due to the introduction of additional airport charges at Newquay.
It has now become common practice amongst the larger low-cost airlines to stamp feet and make a noise when the airports they fly to decide to raise charges. In many cases, even small increases in charges can prompt a budget airline to stop flying to the airport altogether.
Interestingly, with these 2 recent announcements, 2 smaller low-cost airlines appear to be coming to the rescue. flybe announced that they were looking at starting an operation to London from Newquay, and Newquay airport said they were offering Ryanair’s old landing slots to other airlines. Similarly, FlyGlobespan have indicated that they may begin operations from Glasgow to Amsterdam.
